Roundwood 3-11 Eire Og 6-22,

Monday 19th June 2006, Roundwood

On Monday 19th June, we headed off to Roundwood for a league match that was previously postponed, due to bad weather conditions, earlier in the year. We started off our warm-up, but after Jenny hit the referee with a wide ball we were sure he would be against us from the start!

In the first half we started out very well, are backs were blocking everything, our wings were getting into space and our forwards were taking their points. This gave Orla Kelly, our captain for the night, a quiet first half. At half time Eire Og Ladies were ahead by 6 points, with a high half time score of 1-11 to 1-6.

After an encouraging half-time talk we went back out feeling very confident. However, so did Roundwood. They immediately got two very good goals, giving Ruth no chance at all. We only managed 1 point in the early stages of the second half, so with one point between us, we needed a wake up call to get back into this match. I think the midgets did this for us! They were everywhere, biting our legs, arms and even getting behind our ears.

From here on in, we played some very nice and exciting football. Luka was blocking well, Caoilfhionn came out from full back, Loiuse was charging through the middle and Emily, Kellie and Laurie were firing over their points. All our forwards managed a score with Katie Redmond scoring her first point for Eire Og. It was a very exciting game and a great game had by all. The final score 6-22 to 3-11 (debateable!)

Kilcoole 3-5 Eire Og 3-7,

Thursday 4th May 2006, Kilcoole

There was a strong panal for the league match again. I wouldn’t like to be given the decision in choosing the team. Hopefully in July the management will be given just as difficult decision! This was always going to be one of our toughest matches. Our local rivals always have a full panal for the local derby, and this year was no different. The first half was tough!

Kilcoole started out strong with some great movement of the ball between the forwards. This made things all the sweeter with great play from Jade, Luka and Jenny in the backs keeping the scoring opportunity to a minimum. Once they broke through to scoring range it was difficult to keep off some great scores from the Kilcoole forwards. Ruth carried off some great saves in the first half, but Kilcoole still managed to be 2 goals in front at half time.

That is not to say we hadn’t got a few scores, But we had even more wides. Emily was making great space in the half forward line and was carrying the ball well. Kelly supplied some great opportunities and Tracey scored a cracker of a goal! Louise played brilliant in the Midfield winning alot of the kickout throughout the match. Louise and Lorna kept the midfielders annoyed, they were on their backs with terrific play for the entire match.

The second half we turned over a new lease of life. Two goals down and it all to play for. Caoifhlionn and Laurie were making plenty of opportunity and taking a couple of scores to bring the game level but were so unfortunate with so many shots. The Kilcoole goalie made a fair few saves but we still managed to get a couple past her. Fresh legs were needed to turn the game around and ensure we came out on top. Aisling Leonard, Niamh Kelly, Niamh ****, and Ciara Reilly all came on to keep the game in our hands. Niamh popped two points over to bring us two points in front, which we had to hang onto until the bitter end.

A win over Kilcoole, after so many close encounters in recent years, It was great to come out on top. We’ll have an even tougher match when we meet them again, they will be looking to make a dent in our confidence!

Eire Og 2-19 St. Pat's, Wicklow Town 2-03

Sunday 30th April, Wicklow Town

There was a 22 strong panel for the league match on this occasion. It can be said it was truly a game of two halves; with half time bringing the maximum of changes to the team. The girls started well in the first half with the first point coming in the first 5 minutes of play. These first five minutes also saw numerous balls go wide. As the shooting on target improved, the confidence became that little more apparent. Hitting the post twice in succession saw a skilful hand pass over the bar by Caoifhlionn Deeney. There was great passing between the girls; which Laurie Ahern and Kelly Ryder showing exemplary examples of this throughout the match. It wasn't all one sided though. St Pats had the backs under pressure from early on, creating space and taking off a couple of well taken points. That didn't stop Luka going forward to pick of her own point during this match, well done Luka! The whistle for half time couldn't have come sooner for the tough and more physical match than usual.

For half time all the subs were brought on, with other changes all around the pitch. The second half saw Lorna nervously and superbly- (Has she found herself a new position!) Guarding the nets. Ruth McElroy played in the forward Line, Caoimhe saw her self in fear of nose bleeds when she swapped with Laurie for the last 20 minutes.

The team on this occasion:

Éire Óg 4-12 Baltinglass 2-02

Sunday 19th March, Éire Óg Grounds

The second match for Éire Óg was a re-run of last seasons shield final against Baltinglass and promised to be a tough match. In the end it was a bit of a white wash with Éire Óg triumphing over the west Wicklow side with 14 points to spare.

The match started fourteen players a-side as Baltinglass waited for their reserves to arrive, but minutes into the game the last two players joined the field. It started with an excellently placed shot for goal from Laurie Ahearn in the opening minutes of the match which settled the Greystones team into the game. However this score was almost immediately matched by the Baltinglass forwards who worked hard to equal the Greystones forwards. Such was the pattern of the first half, that after 35 minutes it was Éire Óg 1-3 Baltinglass 1-1. Althougth this was no fair reflection of the home team’s unparalleled work rate.

The second half belonged to Éire Óg however as they dominated nearly every position on the field with an impressive display of team work. The last 15 minutes were almost totally one-sides with the Greystones forward lines contribution 2-6 to the proceedings before the final whistle. While the game finished 4-12 to 2-2, the Baltinglass team assured all and sundry that they’d be out to avenge this defeat in the championship.

Scores came from Laurie Ahearn (2-2), Niamh Kelly (0-1), Leslie-Ann Long (1-0), Kellie Ryder (0-1), Caoilfhionn Deeney (1-4) and Tracey O’Halloran (0-4).

Donard 1-04 Éire Óg 4-09

Sunday 5th March, Donard

The opening match of the season for Éire Óg Greystones Junior Ladies took place on Sunday, 5th March and proved a resounding success for the team who came away with a stunning 14 point victory over a very physical opposition. In a tightly fought game, the Greystones team worked hard all over the field with the backline and mid field especially impressive. Captain Mide Ní Shuilleabhain led by example and must certainly have been player of the match. With just 15 players available for the team on the day and no goalie, two players made their goal keeping debut for the team during the match, Eleanor Kelly and Caroline Cawley. Eleanor managed an excellent save in the first half, while Caroline, unluckily, conceded a late penalty from the home side.

Scores came from Caoilfhinn Deeney (2-5), Deirdre Walsh (1-0), Laurie Aherne (1-3) and Lorna Fusciardi. (0-1). Finally, thanks to our travelling support who were fantastic.
