Junior B Football

If spirit in the camp is anything to go by then the Junior “B”s are in good fettle. Philip Smullens charges are a rich blend of youth and experience. In their recent win over Enniskerry former first team players Keith Lewis and David Hayden contributed 11 points to the teams final tally. James Kelly is emerging into a fine talent at centre-field and his progression to a higher level looks inevitable at this stage. Lorcan Treanor in goals is another that is knocking on the door.

U12 Football

The Under 12 footballers have had a very impressive East league campaign which will stand them in good stead for the Championship during the summer. They will have Arklow, Bray, Avondale, Carnew, and Dunlavin in their group. They play these teams home and away, to ensure plenty of games. Matches on Monday nights with training on Wednesdays. Captaincy is rotated. The team has been powered in recent weeks by great performances from Pierse Kelly, Seán Lawless, Marty Mc Gauley, James Delahunty and Conor Randles. The squad have 32 players. The club are very lucky to have Pat Bunce looking after the team. Pat has joined the coaching staff at Eire Og this year and brings a lot to the table. He is delighted with his players and exuberantly tells Scoop “they are building up well”. Pat hails from Tarbert in North Kerry with whom he played for years. He is a teacher in St Laurences. As a coach he brought his former school St Kevins in Finglas to a Dublin Schools title, the final of which was played in Croke Park.

Welcome Alan

A big welcome to the club is extended to Alan Costello who lines out at centre-back on the first team. Alan is a native of Carramore, Claremorris, Co. Mayo. Alan teaches at St. Benildus’ College in Kilmacud and thankfully has come to live amongst us and bring his talents to our club. He comes to us from the all conquering Dublin club St Vincents, where he won Dublin, Leinster and All-Ireland Senior Club medals last season. He was captain of St Vincents for three of his five years with them, only handing over the role to Mossie Quinn last year. He also won a Dublin Senior Club Championship as a student in UCD in 2001. He played Minor, Under 21 (as Captain), Junior and Senior (FBD League) for Mayo. The price of petrol and Dublin traffic jams has been our good fortune!

County Hurlers

Four of our boys are anchoring the Wicklow Junior Hurling team. Peter Keane, James Kelly, Billy Cuddihy and Paulie Sutton, recently flew to Birmingham for a game against Warwickshire and won by 5 points. There was a very impressive crowd at the game. The English team was backboned by Irish lads working there and a few of Irish descent.

Junior Hurling Championship

Our Junior Hurlers took on Newcastle in the Championship on Wednesday last in what was regarded as the acid test of the season. Newcastle are backboned by a number of players who have played at Senior level with the now disbanded St Pats. They hold the unwanted tag of raging hot favourites. This was a brilliant game refereed by Bray man Vincent Duffy. Despite conceding two goals early on Greystones never relented. Leon Browne smashed the sliothar to the net with four minutes remaining to leave a goal separating the sides and a grand stand finish. Our young team can be guaranteed that on this performance they will be there at the business end of the season. Final score Newcastle 3-11; Greystones 2-10. Peter Keane was the outstanding performer on the night.
