Weekly Notes - 9th April 2008U-12 FootballThe Gaelic football season for u-12s opened last Monday with a home match against Bray Emmets. The team was under new management, Pat Bunce assisted by James Granahan, who, going into the game were not altogether cognisant of the ability of their team and were ignorant of the form of the opposition. However, they did appreciate that Bré are never easily overcome. It was not surprising then that there was a degree of trepidation and nervous anxiety in the Éire Óg camp before the players took to the field. These anticipatory butterflies were soon put to flight by a flurry of Éire Óg scores which saw them race into an 8 point lead which they retained to half-time. The respite signalled by the half-time whistle afforded a bewildered Bré the opportunity to regain their composure. And did they make good use of it? They surely did for they so dominated proceedings after the break that they had established a one point lead with 10 minutes left on the clock. All credit to the Greystones lads – they rose to the challenge and kicked 4 unanswered points. Final score Éire Óg 5-5, Bré 5-2. a game to embellish any season – hugely enjoyable and sporting, abounding in individual skills, exciting combinational play and wonderful scores. Ladies FootballThe cruelty of it all! Forcing our ladies of refinement to make that early Sunday morning journey to Baltinglass to play the locals in weather more conducive to one staying in the comfort of one’s bed. The wind blew and the sleet slanted as they bravely went through their warm-up routine. The efficacy, on this occasion, of these exercises has to be called into question as the team was very slow to settle into the game and it was 20 minutes before they registered their first score. At the throw-in the sun broke through but the wind which favoured Baltinglass in the 1st period did not abate. Baltinglass’s interval lead, 4-8 to 0-6, might have crushed lesser hearts but after 3 good victories to date, our ladies were not going to capitulate. Éire Óg were quickly out of the blocks in the 2nd half and were immediately and rapidly eating into the Baltinglass lead, and thanks to goals from Erin Wiley and Leslie-Ann Long were just a goal down approaching the final whistle. Then at the death up popped Caoilfhionn Deeney with the type of goal that has become her trademark. A draw! Éire Óg restricted Baltinglass to a single point after the break. Deirdre Walsh, Caoimhe Ní Shúilleabháin, Niamh Kelly, Becky Fusciardi and Siobhán O’Riordan contributed that little extra in this gutsy Éire Óg performance. Next Sunday they play St. Pats down in Wicklow. The management is delighted to welcome on board Billy Long. Next Saturday the county minors play Meath in our grounds at 2.30. Becky Fusciardi, Niamh Kelly and Emily Hanney are members of the Wicklow panel. Congratulations to Aisling Leonard who was a member of the DIT panel which won the All-Ireland championship in their division of the Higher Education Ladies Football. FixturesTheir involvement in the Leinster Junior Hurling League is proving to be an enriching experience hurlingwise and geographically for our young hurlers. Last Saturday they travelled to Mountrath in Laois and to-night, Wednesday, they play Setanta in Ballymun. The Intermediate footballers are at home to Dunlavin in their 3rd game in Div.2 of the Whittle League on Sunday at 12 noon. Why not go along and lend them your support? |
