Weekly Notes - 9th November 2005

Feedback from this column’s readership – fiainise go bhfuil a leithéid ann! – suggests a degree of dissatisfaction with its lack of economy in the use of words. But what is there to do when information flow is at a trickle? Sitting here facing a page, its very blankness willing it to be written on, one is in total sympathy with the dilemma of poor auld Tom Humphries – Monday, I.T. when he says "you see most weeks this column wakes up on a Sunday morning and doesn’t feel like a column at all. No ideas. No inspiration. A quick review of the weekend papers" (in our case club information data base) "all the good ideas for columns have been taken (that particular cupboard was bare)". Club members, you have a duty of care towards this column. Keep it fed.

Unfortunately one could not be on hand to congratulate St. Davids u-16s on putting together back-to-back victories in the South Leinster D hurling championship. The team was essentially an Éire Óg selection and bore a striking resemblance to that which contested the u-16 county final. This victory should dispel the residual gloom from their county final defeat. From all accounts it was a hard won victory and was fashioned on the 3-goal tally of Paul Sutton playing in his most favoured position in the forwards. Scott Smullen, with his penchant for the dramatic, travelled all the way from the full-back position to rattle the Muinebeg (Bagnalstown) net from the penalty spot – eat your heart out, Davy Fitz! (It is difficult, however, to visualise Scott returning to his position with the same urgency as Davy). Phelim Byrne’s points (0-3) came at vital times and did much to frustrate the Muinebeg second half rally.

"Is olc an ghaoth nach séideann maitheas éigin"(it’s an ill-wind----). The county final defeats have fuelled a determination among the hurlers at all levels within the club to improve their skill and fitness levels. Their enthusiasm has even extended to requesting extra training sessions! Knowing that they have competed against the best within the county, they feel that championship success is a realisable goal. However, they are acutely aware that if such is to be a reality there is a need to be competing regularly at the intensity of the county finals and against opposition of the same calibre. To this end, the idea of participation in the Dublin leagues is being mooted.

The seismic shock of paying out the Lotto 11,000euro was followed by an after shock of 2,200euro two weeks later. A new round of Lotto began at its base level of 2,000euro on Monday. In the weeks running up to Christmas there will be the usual draw for vouchers. A Lotto or a benevolent society?

It is that time of year again, the time of taking stock and the a.g.m. will take place shortly. Also the time for the Christmas draw for which tickets will be issued this week.

Members are reminded that the County Convention is scheduled for the 3rd. December in Aughrim and motions and nominations should be with the county secretary before November 15th. You may submit any such motion to a member of the committee before the week-end.
