Weekly Notes - 15th June 2005Paul Hayden had his work cut-out motivating his intermediate squad at Thursday night’s training. They were going through the motions but their hearts were not in the proceedings. Their minds were elsewhere and who could blame them? They were in a state of shock after hearing that “Dicey”, aka Barry O’Reilly, had been rushed to Beaumont and would be undergoing a serious operation –– while they were training. In the ensuing review of priorities football suffered a temporary lowering in the hierarchy. Thankfully, Barry is made of stern stuff – a quality evident in his performances for blue and white – and he was informing team colleagues in 5am texts on Saturday of his return to comptis mentis. On Sunday he was receiving visitors. Buíochas le Dia for such a speedy recovery and D.V we look forward to seeing him back in charge of his U-12s soon. No doubt they will be “doing it for Barry” in their championship outing this week. The club and members send out their best wishes to “Dicey”. This weekend the U-14 hurlers are heading for the Féile in Cork. We wish them a safe journey and a joyful weekend. Remember lads that “where e’er you roam that you’re Éire Óg men”. We’re sure you’ll do us proud. Friday’s Race Night was both a financial and social success. Our money worries with regard to the Féile trips have, more or less, been assuaged as a result. The fund-raising committee are to be both thanked and congratulated on a job exceptionally well done in such a short time frame. We are extremely grateful to all those who contributed to its success: advertisers, race sponsors, purchasers of horse and jockeys and, last but not least, the punters. Go raibh maith agat also to the Beach House for hosting the night. Our Intermediates play Blessington in the Championship on Sunday in an Tóchar. The confined space of the facility will not help our cause but if they can reproduce the form of the first round they will have a great chance of winning. With the weather being as it has been skin has remained pallid, so, lads you should follow the advice of Gavin Henson, the Beckham of Welsh rugby, and shave the legs and apply the false tan. Our girls have not been idle but pressure of space has not allowed record of their activities. Hopefully we will make up for this neglect in the next few columns. This week our focus is in the U-12s who had their first outing recently against an experienced Bray side. Our girls who were for the most part neophytes with just a few training sessions under their belts gave a spiriting performance. In a most entertaining game one was impressed by the fearlessness of Sinéad Kelly, the goal-keeping skills of Shauna Brannan and the defending of Sophie O’Kelly and Sarah Lewis. Emma Hall and Elena Fusciardi also caught the eye. Maeve Deeny accounted for all the Éire Óg scores in out 5-3 to 2-5 defeat. |
