Weekly Notes - 21st December 2005

The committee of Éire Óg wishes Nollaig Shona agus Bliain Nua faoi Shéan agus faoi Mhaise díbh go léir – a Happy Christmas (have you noticed how our traditional "happy" is, in the onward march to global homogenisation, steadily being replace by "merry") and a Prosperous New Year.

A presentation night for u-12, u-14, u-16 hurlers and u-12 footballers was held in the Rugby Club on Thursday the 8th. It has been the custom for the last few years to present the juveniles with their trophies on the marquee weekend but, this year, with the competitions for these teams running late such was not possible. Thanks, in particular to the hospitality of Vincent and Margaret Byrne the occasion did not suffer from its postponement and all present – the parent support was heartening – had a very enjoyable evening.

Bray Emmets proved to be the hurlers’ nemesis at all levels in the championship – the u-12s and u-16s reached the finals and the u-14s exited in the semi-final. The performance of our lads in all these matches was such as to suggest that they may soon loosen Bray’s grip on some of these trophies.

On the night, awards were made to those players whom it was deemed had made exceptional contributions in their age groups.

Daniel Salmon is home from hospital after treatment for his injury. Hopefully his journey to full recovery will be short. We wish him the best over Christmas and that the restrictions in his movements will not take from his enjoyment of the festive season.

Buíochas le Dia, Barry O’Reilly, manager of the u-12 county champion footballers, is in the best of form after the set-back in his health. The criterion used in this assessment? The sharpness of his tongue!! One suffered a lashing of same with respect to this column’s priorities when he learned that space restrictions last week did not allow acknowledgement of his team’s heroics.
Player of the Year Gary Elliot.
Gary had an outstanding year and played a pivotal role in many of the team’s victories. His father Michael also played for the club.
Clubman of the Year Justin O’Brien.
The recipient of this award was chosen by his fellow panel members. The panel was invited to put forward the names of players whom they deigned to be worthy of consideration for the honour. Justin topped the subsequent poll. He was also a serious contender for Player of the Year.

Pat Mitchell, County juvenile chairman, was a guest on the night. He congratulated the club on the work it was doing and the progress it was making and expressed his gratitude for the club’s input with underage teams at county level.

A new juvenile sub-committee was elected at their recent a.g.m.

The St. Pats sponsored indoor hurling tournament has a changed venue – Coláiste Craobh Abhainn in Kilcoole. It began last week and continues until March 18th with u-10 and u-13 competitions being played on alternate weeks. Éire Óg drew two of their matches (Barndarrig, Carnew) and defeated Kilcoole. It would be worth your while to have a look. Bheadh fáilte romhat.

NB Leave your crutches and indigestion tablets at home and work off that hangover in the St Stephen’s Day fun game at 11.30 am in the Gaelic field.
