Weekly Notes - 29th June 2005

Last Saturday our Ladies travelled across the Sally Gap to Kilbride to play the locals and didn’t return empty-handed. After a very exciting and competitive game they won on the score 3-9 to 4-3. The goals were scored by Eleanor Kelly, Laurie Ahern and Laura Mitchell. Victory was fashioned on above average performances from Eleanor Kelly, Deirdre Walsh, Caoimhe Ní Shúilleabháin, Laura Mitchell, Maria O’Neill and Niamh Kelly. The ladies wish Leah Horan bon voyage and a happy and productive study-year in Brussels. Leah has been a valued member of the team in its transition from no-hopes to contenders and will be sorely missed. Go n-éirí an t-ádh leat Leah.

The Club and particularly the Ladies extend their sincerest sympathies to Rose Mary Mitchell on the death of her father John Nevin from Hollymount – there is no need to name the county as Rose Mary is a long suffering (another giveaway) of the red and green. John was a great community man and was a key member of the local GAA club so it is no great surprise that Rose Mary became involved with Éire Óg – briseann an dúchas tré shúilibh an chait. Ar dheis Dé go raibh anam John.

Our U-12s were at home to St. Kevin’s on Monday in the U-12 all-county league. St. Kevin’s were doughty opponents and it took fully 50 minutes to break down their resistance. Up to that point it had been nip and tuck, indeed, early in the second half things looked ominous enough as St. Kevin’s with wind advantage camped in the vicinity of our goal and began to pick off the points. Stout defending particularly from Alan Joyce and excellent goal-keeping by Brian Coakley (Colclough) prevented Kevin’s ever taking the lead. The siege was broken as ÉÓG again gained the upper hand through a typical Justin O’Brien cameo – a jinking, dodging 30m run followed by a searing shot to the net. Goals followed in quick succession from the speedy Niall Crosbie – they say that he was in Croke Park to study Mattie Forde’s technique the previous Sunday – and Ryan Horan and there was no way back from St. Kevin’s.

Incidentally on the way to the Wicklow match one was berated – the tongue lashes still sting – by Willie "Decibels" O’Hagan for my neglect of the achievements of the U-12 Bs. My defence: live horse and you’ll get grass.

A heartfelt go raibh maith agaibh to our county footballers and mentors for their contribution to a great sporting occasion in Aughrim on Sunday – the weather helped. Their display gave the county something to be proud of; there were of course deficiencies – after all they lost – but their efforts were never less than wholehearted and this was recognised by their supporters who clapped them off the field at the end of the game.

It was great to see Barry O’Reilly at the U-12 match on Monday. Barry is very grateful to all his teammates and members of the club who were so considerate during his recent illness
