Weekly Notes - 1st February 2006

The Dinner Dance has, for some time now, been fully booked out. Indeed demand has been such that there is talk of multiples of the face value being paid for tickets on the internet! To ensure maximum enjoyment for all on the night, a tight time-schedule is in place. It is imperative, therefore, that patrons be in their places at the commencement of the evening’s activities at 8p.m.

Woe is me! "What can be ailing you now?" you, the reader, may well ask. I wasn’t there. Where? I gColáiste Craobh Abhann for what surely, if my correspondents are to be believed, must be a strong contender for game of the indoor-hurling tournament – and indeed many other tournaments of whatever sport. The protagonists were u-12 league top dogs Glenealy and Éire Óg. What excitement! What speed! What skill! The full-throated supporters were enthralled and wished that the contest not end. But, as with a good party, it was better that the game finished on a high. The spectators left with splendid memories and an appetite sharply whetted for more. The final score was 3 goals each. Satiation must wait for the play-off stages. Glenealy leaped from the traps and were soon a goal to the good. Éire Óg’s confidence was not at all disturbed by this and they were soon back on level terms. Then we suffered a double whammy and, for the supporters, the future began to don a bleak apparel. The players, however, never lost hope and fought back with admirable determination to be on level terms just on the final whistle. And, so, we look forward in joyful anticipation to lá eile an Phaoraigh.

Over the morning each member of the panel made his contribution to a fine collective performance. Newcomers Darren Hempenstall and Andrew Parsloe, protegés of Gerry Barry in St. Kevins, had auspicious debuts. Josh Campbell (goals), Chris Boylan, James Nolan and Kevin Byrne were the more prominent among the "oldies" on a panel which also included James Smullen, Niall Kinsella, Jack McDonnell, James Cranley and Ryan Brandon.

Earlier in the morning Éire Óg had defeated Arklow Rocks and Kilcoole in games which entertained greatly without, not surprisingly, attaining the overall excellence of the Glenealy match.

The N.E. Board has stepped in to complement the work of St. Pats in the promotion of indoor hurling. They have taken up the 12 to 2p.m. slot in the Kilcoole venue. This means that the teams have the opportunity of playing weekly rather than on alternating week-ends. We wish the Board every success in its endeavour.

Last Saturday was the first week of the Boards initiative and u-10s from Feargal Óg, Kilcoole and Greystones took part. The competitive element at this level is minimal as it is in the nature of a hurling "getting to know you, getting to know all about you".

It is great to hear that some of the talent within the club is receiving countywide recognition. Darren Hayden and Craig Smullen were on the Wicklow minor team that defeated Wexford last Saturday in the Leinster league. Both played the full 60 minutes and made important contributions to this victory.
