Weekly Notes - 10th May 2006Last Thursday evening one was presented with the choice of going down to the field to watch the Junior Bs play Kilmac or going to Kilcoole to see the ladies in action against the locals. Sorry lads, but no contest!! The ladies match had all the ingredients for an epic encounter; two equally matched teams, intense local rivalry and an abundance of skilful players. Furthermore we had not to that date beaten that opposition and they needed my support to give them that extra little push which would carry them over the line – subsequent events proved that the vocal support was the deciding factor in their victory in this tightest of tight games. Éire Óg played their hearts out yet were 2 goals in arrears at half-time. No way back? Extremely difficult to improve on their 1st half performance. But, mirabile dictu (wondrous to relate) this they did and scored a famous 2 point victory. What commitment! What excitement! What entertainment! Altogether a cracking contest. In a scrooge inspired back unit Jade Coffey and Luka Hargan were outstanding. Louise Young, the star of the game, was ably assisted by her centre-field partner Lorna Fusciardi. Emily Hanney, Caoilfhionn Deeney and Laurie Ahearne were the pick of the forwards. Meanwhile, back at H.Q. the Junior B proceedings had a much more mundane air about them – only shattered at game’s end by a Philip Smullen fire and brimstone complacency-dispelling post-match discourse which would do justice to an Ian Paisley. Aided by 2-2 from Eddie Delaney and 0-1 from Alan Monaghan who put in a cameo appearance, we won rather easily. But this was only Kilmac’s second team so very little with respect to our team’s potential can be gleaned from the victory. However the team is shaping up well and, to date, is undefeated. The series has been noteworthy for excellent performances from some of the younger players in the squad. Paddy Taylor’s play has benefited no end from his sojourn with the County Vocational team and John Coveney is developing into a very effective full-forward. Oran Bambrick has been contributing handsomely to the score tally and Seán Horan is proving to be a very sound corner back. Congratulations to Darren Hayden and Craig Smullen, our county minors, on their contribution to Wicklow’s victory over Longford at the week-end. Wicklow’s performance was described to me as being "super" – they turned an 0-6 defeat by the same opposition the previous week to a 9 point victory. They play Offaly this Saturday in Arklow. Another team with a 100% record is our u-14 boys. Their last victory was over Bray in Bray. Coming up to half time we had an 8 point lead and seemed to be coasting to victory. But 2 well taken Bray goals in the last few minutes before the half time whistle knocked Éire Óg back on their heels. The going was tough in the early stages of the 2nd half but we had a bit to spare at the end. |
