Weekly Notes - 17th May 2006Now, with the Lotto standing at the 7000euro threshold, is an appropriate time to remind readers of the importance of the said lotto in the everyday running of the club. Without its income where would we be? At the very least, ambitious targets would have to be lowered and activities severely curtailed. Readers – unfortunately, this type of column speaks mainly to the converted and it is likely that most of you are probably contributing already – now is a good time to become a member of the lotto-subscribing fraternity by either weekly ticket purchase, by bankers’ order or by annual subscription. The 7000euro pota óir makes a 2euro flutter an attractive gamble. Last week the winning combination was 2, 24, 25, 27 ; there were two winners of the subsidiary weekly prize and each received 100euro. With three of the numbers grouped together in the bottom row of the grid, this set was a scrutineer’s dream. Speaking of scrutineers, we once again express our sincere thanks to those people who, Monday after Monday, exercise the greatest of care in ensuring that all winners are identified. Go raibh maith agaibh-se and also to our valued sellers. The County’s odyssey in the Leinster Minor Championship ended on Saturday. A rather harsh sending-off in the second half had a major bearing on the outcome. Reports were of a Wicklow team showing signs of fatigue and a concomitant frustration after what has been for many in the panel, between County and Vocational College commitments, a very demanding few months. Well done! to our two representatives on the team, Craig Smullen and Darren Hayden. They have played excellently throughout the Leinster campaign and have displayed a level of sportsmanship of which the club can be proud. In the match against Offaly, Darren scored 1-2, 1-1 of which merit the epithet ‘sublime’. This week our attention switches to the seniors who play Carlow in Wexford on Sunday. While no one swallow makes a summer, one cannot but feel optimistic at the news that 68 under 14s, accompanied by their enthusiastic mentors, turned up for the county hurling trials in St. Pats on Saturday. This was in stark contrast to the 17 who bothered to attend last year. Another set of trials is scheduled for this weekend when a panel of 30 players will be chosen to represent the county in Croke Park on June 1st. The Éire Óg mentors waxed lyrical about the manner in which the event was organised by St. Pats. The u-18 girls defeated Arklow in the championship on Monday on a score of 3-13 to 4-2. The pitch was wet and the going heavy but both sides largely overcame the conditions to produce a sparkling game of football. The game was a real test of character for our girls as earlier in the day the majority had been involved in the schools’ final between St. Davids and Loreto, Bray. In a contest in which all the team played their hearts out, Ruth McElroy in goals and the younger players, Rebecca Fusciardi and Niamh Kelly deserve special mention. |
