Weekly Notes - 24th May 2006

One has always nursed a scepticism with respect to superstition but now one is not so sure. The piseóg advises against tempting fate. Last week, even though the thought did cross the mind when writing the promo, one still went ahead. What happened? The 7000euro was won by Seán O’Neill (banker’s order) with the nos. 2,6,8,14. There were two winners of the 200euro. While a 2000euro return on 2euro is still nothing to be sneezed at, the appeal this week for your support is primarily to your better nature and is based on the worthiness of the cause.

In last week’s edition of this paper Tom Fortune M.C.C. is reported as having tabled a motion recommending that the area committee call on the County Manager to cede, consistent with the best interests of the council, rights in the matter of the strip of land adjacent to their clubhouse, to the Éire Óg club. The manager’s mind with respect to the land, as conveyed by Des O’Brien, is interesting viz. it is to be used as part of the package to subsidise the harbour development – and we were all under the illusion that this project was to be self-financing.

Should we apologise to the county Manager for having had the temerity to attempt to purchase this piece of land from the council? After all, we are only engaged in providing recreational facilities for the Greystones area on a voluntary basis. How could we delude ourselves into thinking that our needs would take precedence over those of the developers of that brave new Greystones of wealthy yacht owners and flashy yuppies?

We thank Tom Fortune M.C.C. for tabling the motion – if nothing else it elicited the manager’s stance on the issue – and the local councillors for their support.

The u-10s, in the charge of James Leonard and John Wynne, had a successful outing against Ashford on Friday. It was an evenly contested game and afforded great entertainment for a goodly gathering of spectators. The standard was quite surprising for so early in the season and many of the players on view showed a high degree of promise. They train on Wednesdays at 6.30pm and new players are always welcome.

Saturdays’ training –2-3pm – for 7, 8 and 9 year olds is going "swimmingly" with heartening support from senior players both male and female. The GO games have been introduced and are going down well with the children. These games are designed to ensure maximum participation by each individual and to avoid role stereotyping from an early age. The precocious are not allowed to dominate in play or in set pieces. Physiological measurements have shown that individual players, on average, get much more exercise than in the ordinary game and that they are much less likely to get bored.

The Intermediates have been sailing close to the wind on too many occasions this season and it was not a huge surprise when they hit rocks on Tuesday. After someone had pressed the self-destruct button, they lost by a point to Emmets. To make matters worse, Stephen "Chester" Kelly suffered a very serious ankle injury and will be sidelined for some time. We wish him a speedy recovery.

A belated congratulations to Luka Hargan on her work with the girls of St. Kevins who performed so well in the recent Cumann na mBunscoil 7-a-sides.

All of us in Éire Óg send our sincerest sympathies to the Davis family on the death of P.J. The esteem in which P.J. was held within the club was evidenced by the number of players and committee members who attended the obsequies in Kilquade. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam fíor-uasal.
