Weekly Notes - 5th December 2007

AGM

The agm took place as scheduled on Thursday. It was well attended, at least better than anticipated as extra chairs were required to seat the later-comers. It was great to see that many of those present were willing to put themselves forward for places on the coiste; this was just as well since, with the growth in the club, there has been a proliferation of posts requiring to be filled. The consensus of the meeting was that the occupants of the top table, Gerry Walsh, Cathaoirleach; Carmel Deeney, Rúnaí and Maria O’Neill, Cisteoir were doing a very fine job and they were re-elected unopposed as were Leas-Cathaoirleach and Cláraitheoir Felicity Keane, Assistant Cisteoir Ann Barry and Lotto Co-Ordinator Nellie Vickers. Tom Sherlock was assigned the function of Insurance Officer while his daughter Niamh was elected to the post of Rúnaí Cúnta. Janey O’Halloran took on the responsibility of seeing to the welfare of our younger members. Daniel English, Fixtures Secretary and Gerry Walsh were appointed delegates to the Coiste Condae. The committee welcomes new member Séamus Ahern into its ranks.

Oliver Leonard agreed to continue in his position as head of the development group. In his report to the meeting Oliver gave vent to his frustration at the difficulty he has encountered in drawing down the 2nd moiety of our Cranncur Náisiúnta grant. “Here we are” he said “chomping at the bit (an exercise best left to his horse) to complete the clubhouse and being hindered by the arcane machinations of the CSSO ( the chief state solicitor’s office) which must validate our right to receive this government approved funding”. One could hardly blame Oliver for his exasperation. These statutory legal proceedings were begun in November 2006 in the hope they would be rapidly disposed of (not an unreasonable expectation considering that the project as a whole had been approved by An Roinn Spóirt and that we were already in receipt of half the amount) and that Phase 2 would be completed by now. Is this any way for a state institution to treat a voluntary group endeavouring to place much needed facilities at the disposal of a local community?

Hurling

The game, in this club, that never sleeps. The less than clement weather on Sunday morning did not deter our u-13 enthusiasts of the camán from making the long journey to Cill an Iarainn to participate in the Shield (presented by Peadar Ó hÓra) final of the Gorey and District hurling league. Their opponents were Ballyfad. Both sides have to be complimented for serving up an entertaining game in conditions that were anything but conducive to good hurling. On behalf of the team James Nolan, captain, accepted the trophy from the donor – you probably gather from this that Éire Óg won. While Glen O’Reilly, James Smullen, Danny Nolan, Seán Hughes, Eoin Keddy and Conor Cornwall are worthy of special mention, the team as a whole is deserving of congratulations for their dedication and the quality of their play over the 4 games of the tournament - the bad weather caused the cancellation of some rounds. Team manager, Colm Gaskin, was pleased with all aspects of the tournament and is grateful to the organisers for having allowed us to participate. He sends his best wishes to Kevin Byrne for a speedy recovery from his, hopefully, not too serious injury.

The u-12s had their 1st outing in the St. Pats sponsored indoor hurling tournament in Arklow. They should not be unduly despondent at losing their 3 matches – they are a very young team and showed plenty of promise.

CHRISTMAS DRAW

Tickets are now available from Carmel Deeney and from members of the committee. It would be difficult to overemphasise how important a successful draw is to the financial health of the club. We call on players (especially) and supporters to play their part by selling a few books. From Thursday next (6th) through to the week-end tickets are being sold in Tesco. Are you available to give a hand?

Football

Eight of our u-14 team attended the trials for the county development squad in a wet and windy Blessington on Sunday. They all acquitted themselves well.
