Weekly Notes - 13th June 2007

On Saturday much of the focus within the club - there was also the matter of the Intermediate league match against Dunlavin - was on the Féile and its financing. Two fund-raising activities had been arranged for the day - a.m. a sponsored Gaelathon comprising a mini All-Ireland and a skills competition formatted on the lines of that in the Féile, and a barbecue in the evening. The boys who took part in the Gaelathon are to be congratulated on their efforts in the pitiless noonday sun. Hopefully, as a result, they will have gained some realisation of the time, effort and money which go into the organisation of the Féile enterprise. Sam Thompson was the winner of the skills competition and Niall Crosbie was runner-up.

The barbecue was well attended by both young and old and turned into a very enjoyable evening enhanced by the music of Darragh Woods. The management of the u-14 Féile team wishes to express its gratitude to the businesses, to the Gaelathon sponsors and to club supporters for their generous contributions.

After a drastic slump in form in the league game against Féile finalists, Rathnew, Éire Óg u-14s returned to winning ways last Wednesday with a comprehensive win over St. Nicholas in the All-county championship. The magnitude of the winning margin was surprising when one considers that when the same teams met in the Féile the margin was only a few points. Éire Óg played very well on the night, their passing was pin-point and their running off the ball precocious. They should acquit themselves very well in Sligo.

They are at home to Bray Emmets to-night Wednesday at 7.30pm.

Our Intermediates travelled to Dunlavin on Saturday to play the locals in the League. Unfortunately they came home empty handed. Disappointing, as every defeat is, but on this occasion it did not have the overtones of depression that some of our earlier losses had. Overall the team played well and, prejudice aside, were deserving of victory. In the game, all occasion seemed to inform against us and many decisions did not go our way. We were particularly aggrieved at the Dunlavin goal which resulted from a 14 yards free. In the circumstances under which it was executed its legality was extremely questionable. Éire Óg were very slow to settle and it was only towards half-time, when they were 1-7 to 0-1 in arrears, that they began to realise the purpose of their journey across the hills. At this juncture they burst into life and registered 1-1 before the interval. Eventhough they restricted Dunlavin to 1 point after the interval, they were still 2 points behind at the final whistle. Kenny Naughton and Willie O'Hagan , both back after injury, were stars of the defence and Johnny Barry was the most prominent of the forwards.

All roads lead to Newtown for our championship game against Kilcoole on Sunday 17th at 1.30pm.
