Minor Hurling

Our minor hurlers have a date with destiny on Sunday at 11.15am in Arklow. They play Carnew in the county final. Will you be on hand to help steel their resolve? They could do with your support as their task is a formidable one. The cognoscenti see them as having little chance against a very strong Carnew side. Yet spirits are high (and ochón, ochón may now be further buoyed by the Tipp-Cork result) in the Éire Óg camp and you can be assured that if they fail it will not be from lack of effort and commitment.

Ladies

By virtue of a hard -won victory over Baltinglass the ladies are in the Junior A final again this year. Both teams, on their arrival in Valleymount, were taken with a feeling of being sidelined. Here they were in the semi-final of the county championship playing on a pitch not clearly outlined and with the grass in sore need of a cut. One had to agree that they were justified in their pique and that it went beyond feministic paranoia.

In the 1st half Éire Óg were clearly in the ascendant thanks in no small measure to their rock-solid defence in which Jenny Groome and Emily Hannay starred. Siobhán O'Riordan in goals proved to be more than capable of handling anything that Baltinglass threw at her. Our lead at the break was 2-3 to 0-1 but if we had capitalised on the amount of our possession it could have been greater. After the break Baltinglass, egged on by a vocal bench, upped a gear and had our girls on the back foot in the early stages of that half. They scored 3 points without reply. Were Éire Óg going to pay the price for those lost opportunities of the 1st moiety? Thankfully our ladies weathered this storm and ran out winners on the score 5-7 to 2-4. Niamh Kelly had an outstanding game at mid-field. The forwards, as reflected on the scoreboard, functioned very well as a unit and it would be invidious to highlight any particular performance. All in all, a great team effort.

Our opponents in the final are An Tochar who were recently regraded from senior (an Intermediate grade should be give serious consideration). The final is fixed for 2pm on Sunday in Newtown. Bí ann gan teip. You are assured of a great contest.

VHI Cúl Camps

The football VHI/Cúl Camp circus has pulled its stakes and moved to other venues. Despite the inclemency of the weather during the week of its stay, its sojourn in Greystones proved to be a great success. Much of the credit for this must go to the excellent team of young mentors involved in the training. In excess of 170 children took part and to a girl/boy they judged it a very enjoyable experience.

There is a hurling VHI/Cúl Camp scheduled for Greystones for 13th-17th of August. Some places still remain on this camp. For further information call Colm at 087-2711124.

Club Development Draw

The second of the six Club Development draws took place on Friday 29th June and we apologise for the tardiness in the publishing of the results. They came through during the Féile and this duty got sidelined somewhat in the excitement and euphoria of that event. We hope you will understand agus nach mbeidh sibh ró-dhian orainn. Unfortunately none of the major prizes came our way - the star prize went to Glasnevin. Some Éire Óg subscribers won minor prizes - Cavan crystal etc.

Minor Football

Congratulations to our minors on their victory over Luke O'Tooles on Wednesday night.
