Intermediate Football

The Intermediates registered a hard working win over neighbours Kilcoole in their recent Division 2 League match in Greystones. The game was a classic analogy of the adage “put the scores on the board” when you’re in the ascendancy. Our boys in blue did just this. A return of 2-02 from on fire full-forward Anto Byrne and 5 points from Jonny Barry were the French polishers for the men in the engine room. There’s plenty of life in stalwart Jonnys legs still. He pointed a 45 and two frees from acute angles and took two sweet points, one each with left and right feet. Greystones led by three points at half-time. Halfway through the second period Kilcoole had it back to the minimum. Byrne rounded the Kilcoole stopper in the first half after capitalising on a defensive mix up in the Kilcoole defence and rifled the ball to the net. His goal in the second half was as a result of good approach work by James Leonard, a quick delivery by Declan Hogan and a sublime finish by Byrne. This score closed out the game. The final tally was 2-08; 1-06 in favour of Greystones. In addition to those mentioned there were good performances on the night from Stephen Kelly, Alan Costello and Sean Horan.

County Representatives

It’s great to see the name of Eire Og na Clocha Liatha appearing twice in the County panel. Six weeks ago Darren Hayden joined his colleague Billy Norman in the County Senior football panel. At Club level we see very little of our stars due to the bar on their local participation once they are involved in the County colours. We take great pride in their progression and their involvement swells the chests and the numbers on the DART travelling to Croke Park from the local station. Much has been written about Billy in recent times and he was profiled in the Bray People last year for his football and charity work. Darren has improved his game every year. If he remains dedicated to his God given talent then he will realise his lofty ambitions. He came through the youth academy at Greystones, winning an U/16 Championship medal at Club level and an All-Ireland medal with the Wicklow Vocational Schools team, beating Dublin, Cork and Tyrone that year. He has played Minor County football and was electric in his performances for the County Under 21 side this year. He now takes his place amongst the elite. This elevation to the tutelage of the “Maestro” Micko will develop his game further. Mum Ann Marie must be very proud and she has two sons with All-Ireland medals. Youngest boy Glen was a member of the Clubs All-Ireland Féile winning team last year. Darrens career is in good hands. His father Paul played senior football for Wicklow and is the current coach of the Clubs flagship. Paul was coach to the County Minors last year. The Éire Óg first teams football Manager Seán “The Doc” Doherty is well placed to advise Darren for the big occasion. Seán captained Dublin to their Senior All-Ireland success in 1974. Darrens Grandmother Nelly Vickers tells ’Scoop’ that Darren likes nothing better than a feed of carrots when he visits. No wonder he has an eye for an opening! Both Billy and Darren are great ambassadors not only for our club but the area they represent of Greystones, Delgany and Charlesland.

Au Revoir

to scribe Con O’Súilleabháin who is on a scouting mission in the French Riviera for two weeks with his good lady Marcella. No doubt he’ll have a cupla focal a rá.
